Ontario Trillium Foundation Community Building-Operations Grant Helped Globe Studios Deliver on its Mission

Kitchener, Ontario - Globe Studios has announced the successful completion of a COVID-19 recov-ery project, made possible by a $40,400 Community Building Fund Operating grant received from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The grant assisted our organization with operational costs and helped with the development of a strategy that allowed our resident artists and arts organizations to safely use their working spaces. This project made it possible for Globe Studios to run its exhibition and sale this past spring, the first such event since the outbreak of the pan-demic.

"My sincerest congratulations goes to Globe Studios at this exciting time. By receiving funding through the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Community Building Fund, Globe Studios can continue their important work of supporting 35 studios which house 41 artists,” said Laura Mae Lindo, MPP for Kitchener Centre. “They can continue to ensure that the artisans, arts organizations, potter and sculptor art supply store and ceramics studio accommodating up to 30 artists can continue to thrive. And they can ensure that our Kitchener Centre community remains a collaborative space fostering our imaginations through powerful cultural and artistic creations. Thank you, Ontario Trillium Foundation, for recognizing the power of the arts, and I look forward to all that is created in Globe Studios for Kitchener Center and beyond.”

Due to the mandated closures and out of concern for the artists and arts organizations working at Globe Studios, the building was closed to the public from March 2020 until June 2022. Artists have been able to work in their individual studios, but in-person classes and workshops offered by resident artists had to be restricted until recently. The OTF grant helped Globe Studios operate and develop a strategy that allows its resident artists and arts organizations to function at a high level despite health restrictions. Our open house and exhibition took place this past June, a lively and crowded occasion and a highlight of the Region of Waterloo cultural calendar. We will welcome the public at large into our spaces again on December 3rd and 4th, 2022, for the Globe Studios annual Christmas show.

Globe Studios is an artist-run organization founded by a group of University of Waterloo Fine Arts graduates in 1988, in the former Waterloo Globe Furniture Company. The organization was incorporated in 1993 as a not-for-profit, with the mission to provide safe, suitable, and affordable working spaces for artists and arts organizations. As of December 1, 2020, Globe Studios owns all its building at 141 Whitney Place, Kitchener, Ontario.

ONTARIO TRILLIUM FOUNDATION GRANT

SUPPORTS GLOBE STUDIOS’ RECOVERY FROM COVID-19 IMPACT

Globe Studios is on the path to post-pandemic recovery with the help of a $110,300 Ontario Trillium Foundation Resilient Communities Fund grant. Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s leading granting foundations. OTF is investing in projects of eligible non-profit organizations to aid their medium to longer-term recovery efforts, help with their stabilization and build their capacity and resiliency in the aftermath of COVID-19.

Due to the mandated closures as well as out of concern for the artists and arts organizations working at Globe Studios, the building has been closed to the public since March 2020. Artists have been able to work in their individual studios, but in-person classes and workshops offered by resident artists had to be canceled. Globe Studios could not hold its twice-yearly open house and exhibition, normally a lively and crowded occasion, and a highlight of the Region of Waterloo cultural calendar.

Globe Studios is an artist-run organization founded by a group of University of Waterloo Fine Arts graduates in 1988, in the former Globe Furniture Company. The organization was incorporated in November 1993 as a not-for-profit with the mission to provide safe, suitable and affordable working spaces for artists and arts organizations. In January 2000, with the help of a grant and a loan from the City of Kitchener, Globe Studios went on to acquire 50% of the property at 141 Whitney Place, and became the only artist-owned and artist-run creative co-location facility in the Region of Waterloo. As of December 1, 2020, Globe Studios owns all of its building at 141 Whitney Place, Kitchener Ontario.

The OTF Resilient Communities Fund grant is helping Globe Studios develop a strategy that will allow its resident artists and arts organizations to function at a high level in spite of health restrictions. While continuing to monitor the traffic and activities by artists and organizations and ensuring compliance with health regulations, Globe Studios is taking some immediate measures to upgrade ventilation in spaces that do not have outside windows, adding another cleaning station for tools and equipment, and installing additional washroom sinks. The long-term strategy includes optimizing the use of indoor and outdoor spaces, taking into account the present and potential health restrictions, and developing spaces for programs and presentations that would also raise the profile of our facility in a growing but under-served neighbourhood.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s leading granting foundations. Last year, nearly $112M was invested into 1,384 community projects and partnerships to build healthy and vibrant communities and strengthen the impact of Ontario’s non-profit sector. In 2020/21, OTF supported Ontario’s economic recovery by helping non-profit organizations rebuild and recover from the impacts of COVID-19. Visit otf.ca to learn more.
